OUR STORY
THE CREATION OF THE STONEHOUSE BAKERY
I am fascinated by doors. A true, magical door will always open to a place of wonder and delight. As a young girl, I knew exactly how Mary Lennox felt when she discovered the long-lost key and unlocked the door to her own Secret Garden. I saw my first door to adventure when I was about seven years old. My parents took my sister and me on a weekend vacation in Virginia to a country home surrounded by a forest. My Dad called it The Old Stone House.
I can still see the front door – a solid, massive piece of wood with cast iron hinges. I had to use both hands to push it open to the large entry hall. More than anything, I remember the scents – old leather, faint wisps of smoke from the fireplace, something warm and delicious from the kitchen. I knew wonderful things could happen at any moment.
Several years ago, I decided to recreate that experience by opening my own bakery. I began to create a picture in my mind of a large wooden door with cast iron hinges, opening to a store filled with the tempting aromas found only in a bakery. On one side of the store I saw a tea room with wing-backed chairs and inviting tables around a fireplace. Most of all I pictured friends and family stopping by for a cup of hot chocolate, a slice of Cinnamon Swirl Pound Cake and a moment of calm. I tested pound cake recipes and eventually learned to bake my cakes at a high altitude. It only took six months and dozens of exploding and cratering cakes!
In the first phase, I launched The Stonehouse Bakery and built a website with an online ordering system. I rent a commercial kitchen which enables me to ship my pound cakes throughout the United States. Through the social media communities of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest, I keep our customers up-to-date on our latest flavors, holiday sales and community events.
For the next phase, please join me on my journey to build a place where patrons can gather for a delicious respite. Each week, after I bake and ship my pound cakes to customers throughout the country, I look for the perfect location where anyone can find a forgotten key, open a door and come home. With your help, I will build The Stonehouse Bakery and Tea Room!
Meanwhile, take a moment to relax with a slice of Hazelnut Ganache Pound Cake from The Stonehouse Bakery. Or join our Pound Cake of the Month ClubTM for a delicious treat throughout the year. From our door to yours – Enjoy!
